Forbes magazine — famous for compiling lists of the nation's richest people, top celebrities and leading companies — has included Longview on its latest list: America's Prettiest Towns. Photos of Lake Sacajawea and an Oregon- angle view of the graceful Lewis and Clark Bridge, riverfront mills and Mount St. Helens accompany the list."Not even the port industry that clusters around the Lewis and Clark Bridge can block the scenery of one of the Pacific Northwest's most charming towns," wrote freelance writer John Guiffo, a frequent contributor to Forbes Online. Guiffo, a travel writer who lives in Astoria, N. Y., hasn't personally visited all the towns on the list.

To compile the list, he also consulted experts from the Travel Channel, National Geographic, Fodor's and the author of a book on small Northwest towns. Guiffo said he has traveled around the Northwest but was overwhelmed by "an embarrassment of riches.""There are so many different, really cool towns in your part of the country to just pick one," he said by telephone Monday. He asked Foster Church, a former Oregonian reporter and author of "Discovering Main Street: Travel Adventures in Small Towns of the Northwest," to select the prettiest Northwest town."We wanted someone more familiar with that region of the country," Guiffo said. Church also has a blog, "Small Town Travels," in which he lists all his favorite Northwest towns, including Longview.

Longview "is overlooked by most travelers, despite its history, fine public buildings and superb park," Church says on his blog.
