By William Bibbiani War is, in no uncertain terms, a horrifying experience and something that we should all want to avoid whenever humanly possible. But it's because of that horror, uncertainty, and power that, from a filmmaker’s point of view, war makes for intense, exciting, and meaningful subject matter that can have an enormous impact on the audience. We go to war movies to celebrate victories, to ponder difficult questions, to remind ourselves of the futility of human violence.

We go to war movies again and again and again because these tales have value. But finding good war movies can be pretty darned difficult. Even on Netflix, separating the great films from the junk can be a tough prospect. But don’t worry, you’ve got backup. These are the best war movies currently available on Netflix streaming. We sifted through all the dreck so you don’t have to — below are the eight films that made the cut! Atonement. Joe Wright’s Oscar- nominated starts out as a twisted parlor room romance, in which Cecilia Tallis, a rich young woman played by Keira Knightley, has a passionate affair with the son of her housekeeper Robbie, played by James Mc.

Avoy. But then her little sister Briony becomes infatuated and jealous, and concocts a horrifying lie that splits everyone apart and sends Robbie to prison and, eventually, to the front lines of World War II. Atonement is several movies all at once: a tragic love story, a sadistic thriller, and an impressively ambitious war film.

Beasts of No Nation. In an unnamed but war- torn country in West Africa, a family is ripped apart and their youngest son Agu, played by Abraham Attah, is forced to join a child army in order to survive. His unit is led by the Commandant, played by Idris Elba, who manipulates, cajoles, and takes horrific advantage of his young charges to suit his own satisfactions and pursue his own career. Cary Joji Fukunaga’s Beasts of No Nation is a brutal, even punishing film, and as well it should be. But it’s undeniably powerful.

Downfall. The film that launched a thousand memes was, originally, a celebrated Oscar- nominated drama that depicts Adolf Hitler’s last ten days in power, just before the fall of Nazi Germany. The legendary Bruno Ganz plays Hitler and spent months preparing for the role, studying tapes of Hitler’s speech to capture his infamous tenor. Downfall struck quite the controversy in its home country in particular, where critics and pundits questioned whether humanizing one of history’s greatest monsters was in poor taste, or even dangerous. But the fact that Downfall could spur such a conversation in the first place is surely a testament to its craftsmanship. Good Kill. Modern warfare is changing, and war movies might have to change with these times. Andrew Niccol’s intriguing drama Good Kill is a step in an interesting direction.

It tells the story of the drone pilots who fly into enemy territory, kill their targets, wrestle with the ramifications of the collateral damage, and then drive home to their families, half a world away from the war zone. Ethan Hawke stars as a pilot who feels completely detached from his family and the global conflict, and Niccol’s screenplay dares to touch on upon some serious, disturbing ethical questions. Heaven Knows, Mr. Watch Iron Invader HD 1080P. Allison. The great John Huston directed this handsome, suspenseful romantic drama about a U. S. Corporal named Allison (Robert Mitchum) and a novice nun named Sister Angela (Deborah Kerr) who are stranded on an island in the South Pacific during World War II. As they evade the enemy and eventually try to sabotage the Japanese forces, their undeniable romantic and sexual chemistry becomes almost unbearable.

Of course they can’t act on their feelings… can they? Deborah Kerr was nominated for an Oscar, and deservedly so, but Robert Mitchum was also at his very best in Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison. The Longest Day. War films don’t get much more epic than The Longest Day, a dramatic recreation of D- Day adapted from the seminal non- fiction book by Cornelius Ryan. This impressive production is three hours long, as big as they come, and features an incredible cast that includes John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Sal Mineo, Mel Ferrer, Rod Steiger, Robert Ryan… heck, even Fabian is in this film. It took multiple directors and scores of military consultants who were actually present on D- Day to bring The Longest Day to the big screen.

And at over three hours long, you absolutely feel the enormity of one of the most important single days of the 2. Patton. One of the biggest personalities of World War II gets one of the biggest and best World War II movies ever. George C. Scott is General George S.

Patton, a hard- edged military man who argues, in the film’s instantly iconic opening speech to the troops (played, here, by the movie’s audience), that “no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.” And that’s exactly what General Patton does over the course of this celebrated classic. Franklin J. Schaffner’s film won seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actor, an award that George C.

Scott refused to accept because he didn’t thinking filmmaking should be a competition. A War. Tobias Lindholm’s Oscar- nominated drama is a deceptive and suspenseful story about a Danish military outfit in Afghanistan, and their commander, Claus (Pilou Asbæk), who is trying to keep his unit together as he makes difficult decisions that affect their lives and the lives of the people around them.

When one of those decisions ends up killing 1. Lindholm’s subtle filmmaking and clever screenplay highlights the impossible process by which we scrutinize life- or- death choices — the sorts of judgment calls that can be made in an instant, but then have to be questioned for the rest of our lives.
